A project to turn dead pine needles into Japanese paper to preserve the World Heritage landscape. Miho Matsubara, a World Heritage Site, is located in Miho, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture. In order to protect the pine forests that are essential for maintaining the scenery of the pine grove, the project cleans up dead pine needles every weekend, which have a negative impact on the original pine trees. Since most of the dead pine needles collected are disposed of as waste, we have attempted to find new value in the dead pine needles, rather than simply disposing of them. We visited the Shuzenji Paper Studio in Shuzenji, Izu City, and used powdered pine needles as raw material for making washi.
